Lumbar  Radiofrequency  Ablation

Lumbar Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive and non-surgical, image guided injection procedure using fluoroscopic (x-ray) guidance. The procedure uses targeted heat to stop joint pain, by targeting the indivual nerve tissues in your lower back.

The radiofrequency waves are introduced to heat the tip of the needle and a heat lesion is created on the medial branch nerves to stop the nerve’s ability to send pain signals to the brain.

Pain relief from Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) can last from 6 to 12 months and in some cases, relief can last for years.

Some of the common conditions that cause lumbar pain in the medial branch nerves are osteoarthritis (OA), spinal stenosis, or back injury such an in a car accident.

A local anesthetic will be used to numb your skin. The doctor will then insert a small needle near the painful joint. Fluoroscopy (x-ray) guidance will be used to position the needle. Once the needle is positioned at the correct nerve it will stimulating it which may cause muscle twitching and provoke some of the pain. The nerve is then numbed and Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) can begin that will disrupt the medial branch nerve and block the pain signals to the brain.
