What Is a Cortisone Injection?

Cortisone injections are anti-inflammatory medications. They are not painkillers or nerve blocks, although these are common misconceptions because they are so good at relieving pain. They do this by reducing inflammation that puts severe pressure on your nerves, which results in pain.

Cortisone is a synthetic version of cortisol, a stress hormone your body produces naturally. You may have heard of cortisol, it’s a steroid that’s responsible for your body’s ability to react to stress in a fight or flight mode. In fact, sometimes cortisone injections are referred to as cortico-steroids or cortico-steroid injections, these are just different names for the same thing.

How Do Cortisone Injections Work?

Typically, cortisone is injected directly into the site of inflammation to achieve the best results. This allows it to immediately begin to work on the inflammation that is impinging your nerves and causing you pain.

The cortisone halts collagen production which leads to less inflammation and a nerve calming effect. It’s important to note that cortisone only treats this symptom, not underlying health concerns. Our doctors at Downtown Pain Physicians will continue to work with you to come up with the best treatment plan and long-term solution.
